Modem VS Router

What is the difference between a Modem and a Router? Usually people confuse this two words or maybe they think that there are no differences, but in this post I'll answer to this question.

A Modem takes informations received from the internet and traslates it into data that your computer can read and understand.

A Router takes this translated informations and distributes it to the computers throughout your home or office.

Let me explain the process: the information from the internet travels to your internet provider before being directed to your home to either a telephone cable or coaxial cable. The telephone cable or coaxial cable must be plugged into your modem where informations can be translated into data your computer understands. This translated data travels from the modem to the router via an Ethernet Cable. If the Router has wireless capabilities it will broadcast this data throughout your home or office where can be read by nearby computers. If the Router does not have wireless capabilities, Ethernet Cable must be ran from the Router to each computer on the premises.

Now most Internet Providers provide their consumers with a wireless Modem Router combo which eliminates the need for two devices.

Quale è la differenza tra un Modem e un Router? Solitamente le persone confondono i due termini oppure sono convinte che essi abbiano la stessa funzione, ma in questo post risponderò a questa domanda.

Un Modem prende le informazioni ricevute da Internet e le traduce in dati che il tuo computer può leggere e capire.

Un Router invece prende queste informazioni tradotte e le distribuisce ai computer nella tua casa o ufficio.

Ecco cosa accade durante il processo: Le informazioni su Internet viaggiano attraverso il proprio Gestore di Servizio prima di raggiungere casa su un cavo telefonico oppure coaxial. Il cavo telefonico o coaxial deve essere collegato nel Modem dove le informazioni possono essere convertite in dati che il computer capisce. Queste informazioni tradotte viaggiano dal Modem al Router via cavo Ethernet. Se il Router possiede funzionalità wireless trasmetterà questi dati ai dispositivi connessi. In caso contrario la distribuzione verrà effettuata utilizzando cavi Ethernet che portano la connessione dal Router ai vari terminali.
